Evaluation

Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

From producing the full product, i have learned how much detail has to go into the planning of a full opening of a film and the attention to detail that goes into each shot, we did do this in the preliminary task but as our final product obviously had more shots this became much more obvious to us. I also noticed how long it took to actually film each shot, and as we took over an hour trying to film the first shot we realised we had to do this quicker in future in order to complete the filming on time. From the preliminary task we leanred more about the shots and how to use them to their full advantage, such as shot reverse shot. We learnt from the mistakes we made during the preliminary task, as we tried to manage our time better and dedicate a time slot to each shot to keep our group on track.

Q6. What have you learned about technologies from the construction of this product?

These two photos help to exlain how we edited our film on Adobe premiere, the second image has been labelled to help explain the tools we used.

1) This first tool shows the effects that can be added into the film, this includes features such as dissolve, features that enhance the film and add detail. Also, this box allows the volume of the sounds used in the film to be altered.

2) The second tool is called the editing decision box, al of the things we have used in the project are kept here, including our captured film and also any black screen or sounds that we have used.

3) The third arrow points to the audio track, all of the sounds that are incorporated into our film are kept here and the the volume of the sounds can be changed by dragging the yellow line up to increase the sound or down to decrease. The sound can also be faded out or in using the diamond from the effect box.

4) The fourth arrow points towards the graphics that we have used in our film, these graphics only appear where our film shots appear along the film line, these graphics also include dissolves which fade the graphic in and take it back out again smoothly.

5) This mini screen allowed us to view our captured footage in deatil and precisely edit it to our liking using the timeline below it.For example one thing we used this for was to edit out the voice of the director cutting the scenes from when we were filming.

6) This screen is where we were able to watch the movie in detail and check over it to spot any mistakes or just to see our shots in a larger form.

One particular thing i learnt about whilst constructing the film was about non- linear editing, a modern editing
method which involves being able to access any frame in a digital video clip with the same ease as any other. In our project we used non linear editing and we thought this helped us and made our project easier to construct as it was easier to correct our mistakes which was particularly useful as this was our first time at creating a film. One way that we used this to correct our mistakes was for example at one point we found an unwanted jump cut in our film, but we were able to correct this by inserting another take fo the same shot into the gap to correct the mistake, this would have been difficult if we had been using linear editing. Linear editing is the old method that was used when composing films, it was done by using a roll of film which meant that the shots recorded had to be filmed in order, then, when developing the film and editing, the roll of film had to be physically cut, each shot had to be cut out and then stuck before the previous shot, so they all connected correctly, this would have been extremley difficult and precise to do. I think that non linear editing is a much more practical and precise way of constructing films as it is more technologically advanced and easier to use.

Evaluation question 4

Q.4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

The picture below represents the audience that we have aimed our thriller towards, the younger generation, ages 16- 26. We chose this age range as we felt that our film had a lot that would interest this particular age group, the supernatural theme, the age of our main female character and the fact that there was a death involved. We also chose for our target audience to be both male and female, as by combining the two, we could include more features in our film and attract a wider audience. The fact that we ourselves are within the target audience age gave us a better insight into what we thought other people our age would like to see in a thriller film, and this enabled us to structure ours accordingly.

evaluation question 3

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Firstly, from the very first scene of our film, connotations of a typical thriller film are seen, we chose the main character in our film purposely to be a female, as this portrays the typical idea of the female being the weak, victimised, ‘damsil in distress’, and this idea is further shown as our main character is first seen crying and distraught. We also used typical male connotations when making decisions about our main male character, he comes across as being strong, dominating, and being the character that is in control. The fact that tha the male has more power than the female is shown through him playing mind games with her ad he appears and disappears around the house, and also the way that he plays with her emotions, approaching his daughter when she is alone in her room when she believes he is dead.

It was a deliberate decision to choose a father daughter realtionship for the two main characters in our film, as the male, who as the father is abviously an older character, is seen as wiser than the female and also has much more physical power, and this also supports the idea that the male is the dominant character in our film. When deciding the characteristics we decired the doctor in our thriller to have, we wanted to make him seem as serious and professional as possible, to try and highlight the seriousness of the event that is about to occur, we also aimed for the serious expressions on the doctors face to signify to the audience that the following scene will be a crucial moment in the film and was aiming to get their full attention and concentration.

Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product?

One media institution we found that we thought would distribute our film was vertigo films as they specialise in low and high budget films, we particularly thought our media project belonged to this institution as such films as 'Shotgun stories' and 'Shrooms' were distributed by vertigo films and these particular films were sucessful thrillers. The link to the vertigo films website is below:
http:/www.vertigofilms.com/home.php

Another company that we thought would consider distributing our film is Lions gate films, the fact that they specialise in thriller and horror films would particularly suit our project and also, Lion's gate films distributed the immensly popular horror film 'Saw', and this would be a major asset if our film could be distributed by the same company.
